Coulthard previews Nurburgring

As we head into Red Bull racing’s Sebastian Vettel’s home race, the young German still on cloud nine after his victory at the Silverstone circuit almost two weeks ago, he is aiming to take glory in front of his home fans for the first time.

However, as the team’s veteran player, David Coulthard explained on the team’s official website, things are never straight forward when the Formula One circus visits the Nurburgring....

“The race here has a great historical aspect because the track that we drive on is part of the classic Nordschleife which was 20 miles long and the scene of some titanic battles and historic moments like Niki Lauda’s fiery crash and Jackie Stewart winning by three minutes in the wet.”

“It’s a fun and challenging little track to drive and invites racing controversy through the nature of the corners and/or the weather conditions. Obviously the ball is in Red Bull Racing’s court as we come off the back of the win at Silverstone, but that doesn’t necessarily mean, with the nature of the Nürburgring corners, that that will continue.”

“But I think there’s enough performance in the upgrades that we should see the track be kind to Red Bull Racing and the championship battle continue.”

“My most memorable drive there was when Stewart Grand Prix, which was the foundations of Red Bull Racing, won their first grand prix in 1999. They won because I, while leading the race, changed to slicks and a change in conditions meant I slid off with a few laps to go and I got stuck on the grass, allowing Johnny Herbert to come through and win.  I remember it being frustrating because it was a silly error on my part.

“There is always some sort of race incident, because that is the nature of the track. I’ve had some good wheel-to-wheel battles there with Montoya, Alonso and guys like that. I’ve been on pole there but I’ve never actually won the race.”
