2004 Red Bull Driver Search winner John Edwards will compete this year in the Italian karting championship for the CRG Kart factory team. Three-time United States Grand Prix winner Michael Schumacher and two-time CART champion and Formula One veteran Alex Zanardi raced for the team.
Edwards, 13, from Little Rock, Ark., will move to Italy with his mother.
“It is a big commitment to move to Italy and race in the Italian Championship, but I am just focused on what I will be learning on the track and working to prepare myself to move toward Formula One,” Edwards said. “Racing against the best karters in the world with a team like CRG is an excellent opportunity for me. I know that I might not see success on the track right away, but I will be learning so much in that environment.”
The Red Bull Driver Search aims to find and groom young American talent for a chance to reach Formula One, including the United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Red Bull provides the search winners with a fully funded drive in European or North American road racing the following season.
