McLaren driver Jenson Button was in a strong second place at the Spa Francorchamps circuit yesterday when he became the innocent victim of Sebastian Vettel’s accident, the Red Bull spearing into the sidepod of the McLaren and forcing him out of the race.
While the move wasn’t intentional, the Red Bull driver hitting a damp patch of track and then taking avoiding action that caused him to jerk sideways and ram into Button. McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh believes that it was a very amateurish mistake.
"It was not what you would expect to see in F1 - more reminiscent of junior formulae," Whitmarsh said. "It was a bit of a strange mistake I have to say. I realise it was not intentional but it was a pretty strange one really. If he was going for the inside he had three inches to sneak down there, so God knows what he thought he was doing. That was frustrating. But that is motor racing; we've got to move on now."
Vettel was handed a drive through penalty for his actions, however that didn’t change the situation for Button and Whitmarsh believes that it was a very light punishment under in the circumstances. Vettel also apologized to Button after the race. |
