A1GP: South Africa stripped of pole!

After the discovery of a technical infringement, a piece of tape over the rear wing, South Africa has had their inaugural pole position stripped from them and instead of starting from the best place on the grid, Stephen Simpson will kick off today’s action from third place.

“Absolutely not!” the team said when asked if this gave them an advantage. “I doubt it would have given any advantage at all. It was a very severe penalty, especially as we were a second faster in qualifying. We thought they could been a little more lenient.”

“I am really really determined, really really fired up,” Simpson said on the grid. “It is a pity what happened this morning, but now I just have two more cars to pass. Everyone knows I was the quickest driver yesterday, but it is just a disappointment that other teams weren’t showing sporting behaviour.”

This means that France and Switzerland, the two leading teams in the series, will start alongside each other from the front row of the grid while South Africa will start alongside Italy. An infringement was found with Team Brazil also and they too have been penalised moving down two places on the grid from ninth to 11th.

Meanwhile, Team China has chosen to change their nominated driver for both events today.
