Belgian GP: FP2 – Hamilton takes top spot

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets in the dry second session here this afternoon, the reigning world champion finishing a fraction of a second ahead of Toyota’s Timo Glock and third placed Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen. Mark Webber was fourth followed by Romain Grosjean, Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli and Robert Kubica.

The rain had gone for the start of the second ninety minute free practice session here at the Spa Francorchamps circuit today with drivers pouring onto the circuit as soon as the lights go green to make up for the lost running earlier today. Sebastien Buemi is first to start a timed lap and just as a flood of times hit the boars, the session is stopped so that marshals can remove a wheel cover from Luca Baoder’s Ferrari at Blanchimont.

Minutes later the session restarts and a series of strong runs go onto the board with Fernando Alonso leading the way. A minor spin for Barrichello at Les Combes and he continues as Lewis Hamilton moves to the top of the timesheets. Jenson Button is concerned about the rear of his Brawn, the Brit complaining on the radio that it is feeling very loose.

Half an hour in and Alonso is back on top with Raikkonen now second, however moments later and Hamilton has taken P2 from the Ferrari driver. Mark Weber then puts in a strong lap to go P1 with Trulli slotting into second. Webber then has a moment at Pouhon but continues on unscathed.

At the hour Mark Webber begins a new flyer on the soft rubber but a mistake at the Bus Stop sees his overall best time remain the same. Meanwhile, teammate Vettel also has an off track moment at Les Combes as the clouds begin to roll in over the Belgian track.

Timo Glock is the next man to set the track alight moving ahead of Webber by just over a tenth of a second. Lewis Hamilton then takes second just four hundredths shy of the Toyota runner in the final minutes with Raikkonen third. Hamilton crosses the line the next time around for P1, a fraction of a second faster than Glock.

The session ends leaving Hamilton at the top of the timesheets while Kimi Raikkonen goes off track and comes to a halt.
