BMW announces withdrawal from Formula One

As expected, BMW have this morning announced their withdrawal from the pinnacle of Motorsport, Formula One, effective as of the end of the current season. During a press conference given at their Hinwil factory the news that has been hinted at all day was made official, making them the second manufacturer to pull out of the sport in twelve months.   

According to the BMW Group at the emergency meeting, the resources this decision will free up with be dedicated to the development of new drive technologies and projects in the field of sustainability.

"Of course, we, the employees in Hinwil and Munich, would all have liked to continue this ambitious campaign and show that this season was just a hiccup following three successful years. But I can understand why this decision was made from a corporate perspective. We will now focus sharply on the remaining races and demonstrate our fighting spirit and put in a good result as we bid farewell to Formula One racing," said Mario Theissen.

BMW will continue its program in a number of other series’ in Motor Racing such as the touring car series, Formula BMW, ALMS, endurance races and close to production customer sports.

What happens to the team and its drivers after the end of the 2009 season is not clear at this stage.....
