Brazilian GP: Webber wins, Button and Brawn champions!

Mark Webber may have won this afternoon’s Brazilian Grand Prix, his second win of the season for Red Bull Racing, however the real winners were Jenson Button and Brawn Grand Prix with fifth and eighth placed finishes to make Button the tenth British champion while his team, Brawn GP took the constructors championship in just their first year of racing! Robert Kubica was second with Lewis Hamilton third, Sebastian Vettel fourth, Button fifth, Raikkonen sixth Buemi seventh and Barrichello eighth.

After a disastrous wet qualifying session that lasted over two hours on Saturday, this afternoon’s Brazilian Grand Prix started under dry, but very overcast conditions with the race remaining dry throughout. Everyone got away to a clean start on the formation lap however, the opening lap saw chaos galore starting with a great move from Kimi Raikkonen that ended with a broken front wing as the Red Bull of Mark Webber closed the door on the Finn’s move into second place. The Ferrari driver began slowing with the damage hand was lucky to avoid the accidents behind him.

Heikki Kovalainen came to blows with Sebastian Vettel at the rear of the field and the Red Bull was out while Jarno Trulli tried to make a move on Adrian Sutil and ended up causing an accident that saw both cars out as well as the Renault of Fernando Alonso. Jarno Trulli driver was fuming and as marshals tried to steer him away, the Italian racer headed right for Sutil and began arguing with him on circuit. The safety car is on track.

In the pits Kovalainen and Raikkonen come in and the McLaren river leaves with the fuel hose still attached, spilling fuel all over the Ferrari and Kimi’s face. His exhaust set the fuel on and car on fire but thankfully it went out and the Finn continued. Heikki is rescued by Brawn GP mechanics, the fuel nozzle removed and they both return to the circuit.

The safety car comes in and the race is on! Jenson Button begins slicing his way through the field as does Sebastian Vettel, the two men dicing with the drivers in front of him as they move up the order. Mark Webber sets the fastest lap of the race as Button continues to hound the rookie racer at Toyota, Kabayoshi. Barrichello is now the quickest man as he attempts to build the gap over Webber and the first lap incidents will be investigated after the race while the stewards will investigate the pitlane issue from McLaren now.

The battle continues as Button tries desperately to get past the Toyota. Pit stops begin with Nick Heidfeld stopping first and Barrichello soon afterwards. The Brawn is out in P8 ahead of Vettel but the Red Bull is soon past him in a brilliant manoeuvre. For some reason Barrichello is going backwards losing time as he battles to hold position. Button gets past the Toyota as Hamilton tires to pass Barrichello. Heidfeld runs out of fuel and is out of the race.

Rosberg pits but his gearbox is on its way out and just a few laps later he is in and retired. Button is now up to P1 after starting 14th! A brilliant driver from the British racer here this afternoon, but it isn’t for long as Webber exits the pits to claim the place for Red Bull. He finally pits and comes out in P8, making a move on Buemi for seventh.

A big accident for the Williams of Kazuki Nakajima, who, after coming out of the pits was attempting to pass the Toyota of Kabayashi and clips the rear wheel and is off into the barriers. He is okay, but the car is destroyed.

37 laps in and Vettel pits, a longer stop as they have a minor issue with the front right. He comes out behind Button as Webber leads over seven seconds ahead of Robert Kubica. Hamilton and Raikkonen pit for their last stops as Kubica takes a big chunk out of Webber’s lead just prior to his pit stop. The BMW returns to the circuit in P3 between the two Brawns, Barrichello second and Button fourth.

The laps tick down and Jenson Button is edging that little bit closer to claiming his maiden championship crown here this afternoon.  Barrichello pits for his final stop and eh emerges in P6. Webber pits from the lead for his final pit of the afternoon and he looks to have total control of this race. Button pits a few laps later and after a mere 6 second stop he emerges just ahead of Kovalainen who soon takes the place.  Vettel is next in and like Hamilton, takes a place from Button.

Kovalainen pits freeing up Button to take P6. Barrichello is complaining about a lot of vibration and Lewis Hamilton makes his move and takes third place from the Brazilian racer. Lewis is then told his front wing endplate is broken. Rubens has a puncture with a left rear after being tapped by the McLaren with just eight laps to go! He pits and teammate Jenson Button moves into fifth and position for the word championship crown!

The final lap and Webber crosses the line to win the Brazilian GP while Button takes the crown!

Congratulations Jensonn Button and Brawn GP!
