Button, Brawn and McLaren

One has to wonder just what is going on at McLaren at the moment with all the talk of Jenson Button being lured away from Brawn to join Lewis Hamilton at the Woking based squad next season. For McLaren, this would be a media coo with the two recent world champions, Hamilton from 08 and Button from 09, both British, in a British team. What more could they ask for?

Both men get on fabulously together, they are great friends both inside the paddock and out and would certainly make for the dream team, but apart from a great image and the power to say that they have two world champions on their books, what are the team hoping to achieve by such a move?

Button, who along with his manager Richard Goddard, took part in a well publicised tour of the Woking based squad’s factory on Thursday last week, has made no bones about the fact that he wants more money in 2010 after spending the best season of his Formula One career on a restricted budget due to the financial pressures on the fledgling Brawn GP team in 09. However, there is no bigger poster boy for the fact that money can’t buy you happiness as he wept tears of joy in Brazil last month after taking his maiden Formula one crown.

There may have only been a few million in the kitty for Jenson in 09, but he will never deny that the year was the best he has ever had, even more so than when the team was known as Honda Racing and his pay back was more than double what he earned last year. But no, he wants to trade in everything he has at Brackley for a few more dollars to support his lavish lifestyle, something that McLaren can certainly offer, in order to play number two to Lewis Hamilton.

Now there is no offence meant to Mr Hamilton here, this writer happens to have been one of his biggest fans from pre F1 days, but facts are facts. McLaren have put all their resources into Hamilton, and with strong reason, as the former champion’s 2009 season proved. It was as if the two British drivers had swapped cars and Button was driving the super performing contender while Lewis was left with a car languishing at the back of the grid. But Lewis didn’t pout and moan as many other drivers have done when things don’t go right, instead, he worked extra hard with the team to turn the car into a winner by Hungary, proving that he was more than just a good driver in a good car, instead he was an exceptional driver with an okay car.

So, with Hamilton under long term contract, signing Button would make great sense to the bosses at Woking, but surely Button, even though he would be promised equal treatment and have the number one on his car, would need to be aware of the close knit relationship between Hamilton and the team and what it could do to his 2010 championship hopes. Yes, he will more than likely get the winning car he craves for so that he can defend his crown, but in saying that, he must realize that Hamilton will also be given the same winning contender.

This move could be very spectacular from a fans point of view, two top drivers fighting it out between themselves and it is highly unlikely that we would see a repeat of the Hamilton/Alonso saga from 07 as Button has a completely different nature, but would it be the best move for Button?

Back at Brawn, who has been made aware of Button’s actions through the media just as the British driver intended, he has a team devoted to him in much the same manner McLaren is devoted to Hamilton, only they won’t give him quite as much money as he would like. As for next year’s car, well, although we don’t know if it is going to be as strong as this year’s challenger, the final races of 09 seeming to indicate as much, Ross Brawn’s reputation for race winning contenders precedes him and another strong contender cannot be ruled out. Add to that that they really want Jenson to stay, hope is he isn’t destroying some of the loyalties built up over the years by his outpouring for more money and the extent in which he will go to get it.

Last but not least, don’t forget the Mercedes factor. At this stage it is still not clear how much, or how little for that fact, Mercedes is planning on putting into Brawn with some speculation being that they only days away from splitting with McLaren, despite several years left on their long term partnership and turn Brawn into a German entry of their own with Nico Rosberg at the helm.

There are lots of factors for Button to look at ion order to make a final decision, let’s just hope he makes the right one.
