Catalunya officials taking no chances

After suffering racial abuse at the hands of a few wayward would be Formula One fans that seemed determined to upset Fernando Alonso’s former team and teammate here at the Barcelona circuit three weeks ago, Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren team are enjoying a much nicer atmosphere for this week’s final pre season testing session.

Instead of being lambasted by Spanish spectators painted black and wearing wigs while brandishing racial banners, the grandstand across from the McLaren garage at the end of pitlane is empty this time out and Lewis Hamilton, who has topped the timesheets here for two successive days, has been allowed to test in peace.

Therefore, it appears as if the FIA’s warning that racial prejudice will not be tolerated in any form and if allowed to continue, Spain could lose their home grand prix in April, track organizers have done everything in their power to make everything run smooth this week.

“We have made some changes," a circuit spokesperson told the Guardian. "We checked all banners and fans' clothes as they came in, which we usually only do at the grand prix. We also shut off the part of the stand opposite McLaren so that the fans would be unable to upset him. Access has been reduced in the paddock and we have also closed part of the roof because we want McLaren and Hamilton to be comfortable."

Testing concludes here today.
