Cosworth engines were part of 2010 deal

After being left out of the 2010 Formula One Championship season, rejected team bosses are scratching their heads and coming up with claims that the FIA put a condition on new entrants that they were not prepared to accept, making the selection process somewhat prejudicial/

Reports in the Telegraph claim that the three new teams, USFI, Campos and Manor, all agreed to run with Cosworth, an engine supplier not currently associated with the FIA world Championship while other teams such as Prodrive, and Lola were aiming at running with Mercedes, Ferrari or Renault engines.

It appears as if the FIA wanted a new supplier in the series that was not part of the threatened break away series and new entrants were told it was ‘mandatory’ to buy engines from Cosworth if they wanted to be accepted for the 2010 grid.

"We were told that if we wanted to take up the 2010 grid slot we would have to sign a three-year engine contract with Cosworth," one team boss told the Telegraph claiming that new teams were "hand-picked for political, rather than sporting criteria."

The FIA attempted to justify their decision by claiming that if they didn’t prioritize a new independent engine supply it would leave the entire grid ‘at the mercy of the car industry and no new team would be able to enter without their permission.’

Meanwhile, Cosworth are denying that they had any part in the FIA’s demands.
