According to reports in the Australian press, Melbourne could host a repeat of this years ‘F1 through the streets’ that fans witnessed in the days leading up to the British Grand Prix with discussions already underway in regard to turning the city’s streets into a mini F1 track through Swanston, Flinders, Russell and Collins streets as part of the GP’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
The $300,000 ‘race’ is currently being considered to include half a dozen cars, one more than likely piloted by Aussie icon Mark Webber, and will take place during lunch hour on Wednesday before the season opener.
"Yes, I've had an approach from the Grand Prix Corporation," Mr Pitchford, chief executive of Melbourne City Council was quoted as saying in the Age. "It appears to be a seriously good branding exercise. This is exposure for the city you just couldn't buy. If it's feasible I'll put a recommendation to the council as soon as it's sworn in."
A Formula One car has already made a run through the proposed route one night earlier this month with speculation being that it was to check the way it handled the uneven street surface, including tram tracks that litter the city.
