FIA investigating Renault’s actions in Singapore 08

The FIA has confirmed that they are investing claims made on Sunday afternoon that Renault are guilty of race fixing at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.

It is alleged that the French based squad’s disgruntled driver, Nelson Piquet, who was dismissed from the team during the four week summer break, has made revelations about the inaugural night race that included his being told to crash on lap 14 of the event, the same lap that his struggling teammate Fernando Alonso, came into pit after being fuelled light after a dismal qualifying session.

The story goes that instead of fuelling the Spaniard heavy, Renault opted to go the other way and hope that on a lighter fuel load he would be able to make up several places at the start. When this failed to happen and it was drawing time for that first very early stop, Piquet was told to crash his car so that a safety car would be called and the pits would be closed to the rest of the grid.

This is exactly what happened and as a result Alonso went on to win the race.

While there has been no official confirmation that Nelson Piquet junior blew the whistle, it is well known that he is very upset with being dumped by the team and his so called manager, Flavio Briatore, who he labelled his ‘executioner’ instead of his manager.

If the FIA find there is a case to be heard, the second case of cheating this season after Lewis Hamilton’s mistake in Australia, the World Council will be called to sit in judgement and possibly impose a harsh fine or worse, as they did more than just cheat, they made a driver cause an accident that could have resulted in injury or even death to himself or other innocent victims.
