The first corner of the Turkish Grand Prix was one Giancarlo Fisichella would like to forget, the Italian racer almost colliding with his teammate as they both attempted to move ahead of the Ferrari piloted by Michael Schumacher. But, when it came down to it Fisichella thought he was about to hit his teammate, and instead of jeopardizing the Spaniard’s world championship hopes by being knocked out of contention, Giancarlo sacrificed his own race.
The move, that saw him lock the wheels on his Renault and go into a spin, a move that created a certain degree of chaos behind him, sent him into the pits for repairs and secured him an afternoon of fighting back to eventually finish sixth. Aside from the three points this netted, it also saw high praise coming from the team for his selfless actions.
“Fisi was really good because it got a bit messy and he was worried that he was going to hit Fernando. He locked everything, knowing he would slide away from Fernando, which was a generous thing to do. He sacrificed himself and drove like a demon after that,” Pat Symonds praised. |
