Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso topped the timesheets here at Hockenheim this afternoon to finish ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa. Mark Webber was fourth followed by Nico Rosberg, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Robert Kubica, Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg.
Although this second ninety minute free practice session had been declared wet as well, there was no actual rain for the start of the session and the damp track didn’t take long to dry. Kamui Kobayashi is out as soon as the lights go green, the Sauber driver quickly followed by several of his colleagues. The cars are running on slick rubber and Kobayashi hits a damp spot and fights to keep his car on track as he sets the first timed lap of the session.
Drivers begin setting times and lowering the benchmark lap after lap. Sutil is the early pace setter once again as the track dries more and more but twenty minutes in and it is Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari at the top of the leaderboard, his teammate then emerging to take over the top spot and make it a Ferrari one two.
Rain begins to fall, ever so slightly with Sebastian Vettel falling victim to the damp conditions through the stadium, the Red Bull going across the grass before returning to the circuit and continuing on. Meanwhile, teammate Mark Webber then takes his place at the top of the timesheets.
Alonso and Webber begin trading fastest laps at the top of the leaderboard with Massa and Vettel also getting in on the action. Alonso has a moment in the penultimate corner but hangs on to the Ferrari. All the top runners have had off track moments and this session Michael Schumacher is actually up in the top six.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Lewis Hamilton has not been out on track as the McLaren mechanics work feverishly on repairing his contender after his crash in practice one. Schumacher runs wide at the stadium and tells the team the cars rear end is feeling odd so he pits.
Ten minutes remain and Hamilton is out and he goes 18th on his first run before improving it to fifteenth. Jarno Trulli’s Lotus comes to a halt, ending his day early, just like Michael Schumacher, whose Mercedes was damaged in his earlier off. Hamilton moves up to thirteenth while Alonso remains at the top of the leaderboard ahead of Vettel and Massa. Hamilton improves to seventh as the clock ticks down, the session coming to an end with Alonso on top of the timesheets. |
