McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets again this morning to finish ahead of Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Jarno Trulli and Nico Rosberg.
Cool conditions prevailed here at the Nurburgring circuit this morning as teams prepared for the second day of action ahead of tomorrow’s German Grand Prix. The session gets underway with Sebastian Vettel leading the way. Once again rain clouds look to threaten the day’s activities.
Felipe Massa sets the first flying lap of the day, but he is jostling for position at the top with the Force India of Adrian Sutil. Several more drivers put down times and almost half an hour in, Lewis Hamilton is at the top of the times ahead of Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button. Meanwhile, the second Brawn contender of Rubens Barrichello is undergoing early repairs and the Brazilian is yet to set a time.
Kazuki Nakajima slots into P3 behind his teammate, who, in second place, is almost a second behind Hamilton. The second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen has also had a very lengthy pit stop and finally takes to the track. Mark Webber slots into second place now, the Red Bull still almost a second behind Hamilton as the dark clouds get closer and closer.
Kovalainen moves up to eleventh place, but the Finn, who is not running the new aero package this weekend, is still almost two seconds off his teammates leading pace. Rubens Barrichello is finally out for his first run as Timo Glock is the next to take P2. However, he too is soon demoted, this time by Felipe Massa who is less than half a second shy of top spot.
Adrian Sutil is continuing Force India’s good run here this weekend, the German slotting into P3. However, as times continue to tumble, he is soon down in P7 with Hamilton still untouchable at the top of the field ahead of Rosberg Webber and the second Force India of Giancarlo Fisichella. Meanwhile the two BMW’s are sitting at the very bottom of the timesheets with just eight minutes to go.
Jenson Button doesn’t seem to happy with his Brawn contender right about now as he sits down in ninth place, 1.8 seconds behind Hamilton’s best time. He returns to the track on the super soft rubber and improves to P5, but he is still nine tenths shy of top spot. Raikkonen is now second, Massa fourth, the two Ferrari’s also on the super soft compound. All drivers are out on track for their final runs before qualifying. Massa is on a lying lap and gets within three tenths of Hamilton while Alonso finally makes a charge and goes third. Hamilton, content with his top time, returns to the pits, as does Massa as the chequered flag falls, ending the final practice session of the weekend. |
