Hakkinen still in the frame for Williams drive
Even though they are in no rush to sign on their number two driver fort eh upcoming 2005 Formula One season, the BMW WilliamsF1 squad have admitted that former double world champion Mika Hakkinen, is still on their list of possibilities, despite the fact that bringing him back to the series after a long absence could be a risk. “It would be a risk after he has been out of the sport for three seasons,” Patrick Head said in Autosport. “But you have to think seriously about a man who has the talent to twice beat Michael Schumacher to the title.” Although the team have every confidence in new signing Mark Webber, they do realize that the Australian driver has yet to really prove himself with his best finish coming in his debut race for Minardi three years ago. Now after two years with Jaguar, the car failed to help the driver live up to his promise and Williams feel they may need a more experienced racer by Mark’s side. As well as Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Nick Heidfeld, Antonio Pizzonia and maybe even BAR tester Anthony Davidson are on the Grove based squad’s short list.
