Half the grid is useless claims Dennis

After the dust has started to settle in regard to the Ferrari/McLaren spy affair, reports in the British press state that McLaren team boss Ron Dennis has claimed that as far as he is concerned he has the two best drivers on the Formula one grid in double world champion Fernando Alonso and rookie racer Lewis Hamilton, who has taken the season by storm to date, and that half the grid shouldn’t even be there as they are nothing but useless….

"Fifty per cent of the grid is made up of useless drivers," he was quoted as saying in the People.

There are many that would disagree with that statement, and there are some that would, however he didn’t go as far as to state which drivers shouldn’t be taking part in the pinnacle of Motorsports every second weekend. However, he did go on to explain why Lewis Hamilton has performed the way he has and why they choose the young rookie to line up against the Spanish champion and to date, their decision has paid off with the young Brit finishing just one race out of ten off the rostrum and currently leading the championship by two points with seven rounds remaining…

"We wanted a driver who was young and fresh, not a recycled driver coming from another team with the habits of another team. We wanted someone who could make 99 per cent dedicated commitments. McLaren wanted a new driver on his way up, not an old one on his way out. Someone from an existing team would have been a waste of money. We want to take the initiative with a new guy,” he said. “If you want to be the best team, you must be innovative and choose a dedicated driver.”

“This includes his physical condition, as well as the way he behaves and looks. It also includes the rules for the team. A team is a small, highly-trained army with a specific mission - winning races. The way to run a team is a bit like an army. It does not exclude human emotions but it takes a discipline, a different vocabulary and careful planning. The driver in our team must have real mental focus and commitment. Lewis has nothing material to think about. He must appreciate that several people facilitate his life. Expectation and anticipation are not in his daily thought process."
