Red Bull racer Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets in Hungary this morning finishing ahead of teammate Mark Webber and the Renault of Robert Kubica. Jenson Button was fourth quickest with Rubens Barrichello fifth, Pedro de la Rosa sixth, Fernando Alonso seventh, Nico Rosberg eighth, Michael Schumacher ninth and Nico Hulkenberg in tenth.
A dry track but overcast skies greeted the teams for the opening ninety minutes of free practice here at the Hungaroring with drivers out reasonably early, the smaller teams leading the way as per usual before the big boys emerged to run through their normal Friday regimes.
The main contenders were at the top right from the start with the Red Bull duo trading top spots for the first half of the session. The two Ferrari’s didn’t really impress to begin with nor did Lewis Hamilton, while teammate Jenson Button hadn’t even set a time half way through.
Robert Kubica was strong as well, the Renault driver also strong at Monaco and the two tracks resemble each other in certain areas and the Polish racer was soon right up behind the Red Bull duo.
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who is making his return to this track after his horrific accident here in qualifying last year, was testing the team’s new front wing and was lapping around the middle of the grid while teammate Fernando Alonso was in the top six for most of the morning.
Over an hour in and Button sets his first timed lap to go seventeenth fastest, right behind his teammate. Vitaly Petrov spins his Renault but gets it going again and continues on.
Vettel is pushing hard and has a minor off at the exit of turn 6 and 7 while Massa has a moment at the final corner. Meanwhile, Red Bull mechanics are busy working on the rear section of floor on Mark Webber’s car. Button moves up to P4 ahead of Rubens Barrichello while his teammate remains way down the order in eighteenth overall.
The chequered flag falls and Vettel stays on top. |
