It was reported yesterday that Red Bull and Ferrari have asked the FIA for clarification about the rear wing on Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button’s McLaren with Christian Horner telling the British press that there is slot on the wing that affects the air flow and they can pick up a lot of straight-line speed as a result.
Horner indicated that Ferrari were making ore of a fuss than Red Bull, however they both suspected it may be illegal, hence the call to the FIA to verify the situation.
McLaren have since dismissed any thoughts of illegality on their new car claiming that it has already been given the green light by the FIA, however F1 technical delegate Charlie Whiting visited the factory yesterday just to ensure everything was above board.
A spokesperson from the team said that they were unaware of any protest and that they are confident their car is legal. He also suggested that the only reason this has suddenly appeared is because it’s ‘such a big thing that sticks out of the top of the car. So rivals can easily see it and get excited about it.
Further speculation points toward the Mercedes team with rumours that they will be sporting a new “super-diffuser” in Bahrain that could improve performance significantly.
Hopefully all this will be put to rest in Bahrain in just seven days time when teams line up for the opening practice session of the season. |
