After the Brazilian Grand Prix came to a close, officials looked into the refuelling incident during Heikki Kovalainen’s first stop that saw the McLaren driver pull away from his pit bay with the fuel nozzle still attached, spraying fuel all over the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen who was close behind before brave Brawn mechanics managed to free it.
The dangerous liquid was splashed onto the Finn’s face as well as his car, which was soon engulfed in flames. Luckily, the fire soon extinguished itself and no one was harmed.
An investigation post race deemed McLaren guilty of unsafe release and fined the Woking based squad a sum of 50,000 dollars while Heikki was handed a twenty five second time penalty which dropped him to twelfth place overall. |
