McLaren’s controversial rear wing ahs passed scrutineering ahead of this weekend’s season opening Bahrain Grand Prix with team boss Martin Whitmarsh confirming that the Woking based squad are using what is nothing short of a ingenious new system that has been described as a ‘simple but brilliant trick.’
Since being declared legal, other teams have taken a strong interest in the system that sees the drivers block the flow of air through a duct into the cockpit via their knee, changing the pressure and therefore affecting the way the rear wing works, stalling it at high speed.
The ‘F’ vent as it is being labelled, is now more of an intrigue to other teams and Whitmarsh believes everyone will soon be designing their own version....
"People will look at what we have got on our car and I would imagine that most teams are now looking for how they would implement such a system," he told Autosport. "I think there was a 'what is it?' question initially, then there was 'it can't be legal'. Now people are starting to understand it, there is 'how quickly can we implement it?' Most people are saying that it is something quite ingenious. This was a very creative and ingenious individual in our company who came up with the idea and we've developed it."
"From what I understand, there are no grounds for a protest. I don't think everyone yet understands the nature of the systems that are on our car. So if they put a protest in, it would potentially be on a wrong set of assumptions as to what we've got. So we will see." |
