There was a little bit of controversy over the course of the German Grand Prix weekend when the flexibility of the front wings used by both Ferrari and Red Bull came into question by a number of their rivals to give them an advantage.
It seems as if photographs of the offending wings and endplates were given to all teams as well as the sport’s governing body however Autosport is reporting that the lower than normal wings were investigated after the race and given the all clear.
Now, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh is planning to try and replicate the system for use on his cars....
"The pictures I was shown, neither myself nor our engineers can explain. But that may be because we are not clever enough, but it is unusual,” he told Autosport. "I've spoken to Ferrari about it because they live next door (in the paddock) and I went to see them and said: 'This is what I've been shown because it looks odd.'”
“I didn't ask them to account for it, and I didn't want them to do anything or talk behind their back about it, so I went to their team principal and said there are concerns you should be aware of. It is for others to take judgement.
"We would like to understand it, because if you can do what they are doing legally then we would like to do it. If you can get your endplates down by the ground they can get more efficiency. And if they are doing that in a clever and legitimate way then we need to do it in that clever and legitimate way."
