Montreal to return in 09?

Rumours doing the rounds in the Australian Grand Prix indicate that Montreal could very well be back on the agenda for the 2009 season, the Canadian venue to replace the new event that was originally due to be held in Abu Dhabi.

It seems as if the economic downturn has placed doubts on whether or not the new venue will be ready on time and rather than being left with just a sixteen round season, rumours indicate that Montreal will be contacted in order to host this one off round.

Montreal was dumped from the calendar due to financial issues and although they have yet to be contacted by FOM about hosting an event this year, they have said they would need to have a firm contract in place and not just as a one off.

"We have been talking with [F1] boss Bernie Ecclestone about [the race] coming back in 2011 or 2010," Gerald Tremblay told the Montreal Gazette. "If for one reason or another the Grand Prix [comes calling], we don't want to have it just in 2009. We want a long-term agreement that respects our ability to pay."
