The Italian Grand Prix will remain on the Formula One calendar until at least 2016 at its current venue, the high speed Monza circuit, with an announcement being made by track officials yesterday.
"The Italian Grand Prix will be at Monza until 2016," said Claudio Vigano. "The extension of the contract has been signed."
There have reports and high speculation in recent months that FOM supremo Bernie Ecclestone was looking at moving the race from its traditional Monza venue to a street race in Rome and despite his confirmation earlier this year that a deal had been struck to do just that, he refused to confirm what year those plans were likely to go ahead.
Also, this news doesn’t cancel out the hopes of a race in Rome, it just means it will end up being an addition, not a replacement to the current Italian Grand Prix. |
