Just when we thought the tyre choice for 2011 was a tossup between Michelin and Avon, Pirelli has thrown its hat into the ring as well with an announcement that they will be putting forward their own proposal to the FIA at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix.
“Pirelli communicates its decision to present a technical and commercial offer for supply of tyres to all the teams in the Formula One world championship,” they said in a statement. “The company plans to present the bid to FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) and FOA (Formula One Administration Limited) by 9 May, the date of the next Formula One Gran Prix to be held in Spain.”
Williams’ technical director Sam Michael confirmed after the recent FOM meeting that the teams had discussed the tyre situation and it was a decision between Michelin and Avon with cost versus experience being the main issue.
However, Michelin wants competition, while this announcement indicates that Pirelli would be open to being a sole supplier, something FOM boss Bernie Ecclestone is in favour of.
