Red Bull was all over me says Webber

Mark Webber announced just after the Hungarian Grand Prix that he would be joining the Red Bull Racing team for the 2007 season and beyond, the Australian driver basically returning to the team he left for Williams two years ago. When Mark made the jump to Sir Frank’s team, Red Bull was still in the process of purchasing the then Jaguar team where Mark had raced for two seasons. Now, he will return ‘home’ replacing Christian Klien, who had opted to stay on through the team’s transitional period.

Prior to Mark’s announcement that he would be teammate to David Coulthard next year, there was speculation that he was in with a good chance of taking over the drive vacated by Fernando Alonso at Renault. Over the course of the Turkish GP weekend, Mark actually revealed that the reason he finally opted to take up the offer from Red Bull was because Renault’s desire to have him alongside Giancarlo Fisichella had waned significantly.

That said however, he is looking for some good results with the Adrian Newey designed Red Bull next year to justify the move….

"Yeah, OK Red Bull isn’t going to win a world championship this year whereas Renault is, or at least they'll finish second," Webber told ITV. "But actually Renault wasn't really all over me in the end and Red Bull were so that's why we went there. If I can jump into a solid season next year, do well, and not have average results (and) it would be nice to have a car that works out really well, I can really build on that. Then I can look back and say that, yes, I made a good call."

Mark had the option to stay with Williams, Sir Frank admitting that he had tried all he could to keep the Aussie in his team, but even with the move to Toyota engines in 2007, Mark was not confident that the team would be able to improve on their 2006 performances enough to warrant him to stay.

"It's made it tough to believe things will change, but I might be proved wrong next year. Williams could have a top year. They have some great individuals there, but it is still a team that is going to have to go through a lot of learning again next year."
