The sport’s governing body have suspended the Renault Formula one team from the next round of the FIA Formula One world championship for allowing their number one driver, Fernando Alonso, to leave the pits after his first stop in Sunday’s Hungarian grand Prix with one wheel unsecured.
On lap thirteen Alonso left the pits with his front right wheel vibrating to the extent he thought he had a puncture, however a few turns later the wheel came off and bounced down the circuit before coming harmlessly to rest on the grass.
After reviewing footage from Sunday afternoon’s race, as well as radio transmissions where they didn’t even tell their driver of the error, the FIA handed down their rather tough verdict, a verdict the team has since appealed.
If the FIA, who is reacting to recent incidents in racing, one that saw young Henry Surtees killed when a wheel from a competitors car struck him in the head, and Felipe Massa seriously injured after a spring from Rubens Barrichello’s suspension hit him in the face, uphold their decision, Alonso will miss his home GP in Valencia at the end of next month. |
