Renault will supply KERS at reasonable price

At Wednesday’s Formula One team’s Association meeting (FOTA) the return of KERS was a hot topic once again after all teams agreed to scrap the idea after just one year of running in the sport. The kinetic energy recovery system proved to be too costly to develop and run for most teams, however, there is now a chance that it could make a return after all.

According to Williams technical director, Sam Michael, the system, which helped several teams last season by giving an added boost of power once every lap, could be supplied to other teams by either Ferrari or Renault, for less than a million Euros per team, however while Renault will supply anyone who wants to use it, Ferrari’s system is limited to teams running Ferrari engines, such as Toro Rosso and Sauber.

“The FOTA teams had an agreement not to run KERS in 2010 but it still forms part of the technical regulations for the Formula One championship. The deadline to change this agreement in prospect for 2011 was the end of March, a date which we were ready to prepare a file detailing our proposal,” Renault told Automoto365,

“Renault submitted a dossier, so did Ferrari. It was necessary for a possible return of KERS in 2011 and we showed that the return of KERS would be possible in a reasonable financial framework. But it needs to be understood that this device would be interesting only if the supplied energy is higher than what it was last year.”
