Ferrari champion Michael Schumacher insists that he never expected to be in a position to clinch a seventh world title as early as the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend but that is the likelihood.
A win at his favourite track, Spa, this afternoon would clinch the championship with four races left if he scores only two more points than teammate Rubens Barrichello. And, with his second place on the grid to Barrichello’s sixth, the possibility of this happening looks very good indeed.
"Being in a position to win the title at this stage is the fruit of an unexpected and superb season," he said. "The important thing is to race well and whatever happens happens."
After his victory in Hungary Schumacher admitted that he was torn about where it would be better to win...at Spa which he considers the best and is the one closest to Kerpen where he grew up, or at Monza in two weeks in front of the Ferrari faithful.
"I will take it wherever it is possible,"said the 35-year-old German. "I won't be approaching this race any differently than the others."
