There has been no denying that Ferrari have had a very poor start to the 2009 season scoring just two points finishes in the five events leading up to Sunday’s Monaco Grand prix, one from each driver, Kimi in Bahrain, Felipe in Spain, but the streets of Monte Carlo saw a definite improvement on all fronts.
After qualifying on the front row, Kimi went on to secure his and the team’s first podium finish of 09 with a third placed finish behind the two Brawn GP racers while Felipe finished fourth after setting the fastest lap of the race. The results were proof that the Maranello based squad’s new upgrade package is working well, even if Monaco is not the best platform to test it on.
Despite the result, Felipe is not getting too carried away at the moment and is refusing to judge if they can now be classed as the second best team on the grid just yet....
“I think maybe we need a couple of races to be sure that we are the second strongest team. For the moment I think it is too early to say – Red Bull sometimes they are very, very strong and sometimes they are a little bit less,” Felipe told Autosport. “So I think we need to wait for Turkey and another race to see where we are. We need to make more points, we need to finish the next race in front of Red Bull, and hopefully in front of Brawn as well, to show that we can be the second team and fight every race to be on the podium and maybe to win the races. |
