Turkish GP: Hamilton leads Button in McLaren one two!

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton took his first win of the season today to lead home a McLaren one two with Jenson Button in a close second. Mark Webber crossed the line third after an accident with his teammate. Michael Schumacher finished fourth ahead of Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Adrian Sutil and Kamui Kobayashi.

Lucas di Grassi’s Virgin was forced to undergo an engine change prior to the start of the race meaning that he was left to start the event from pitlane. All eyes were on Mark Webber as he led the pack around the Turkish track for the warm up lap, will he or won’t he become the first driver to take a hit trick of wins since Jenson Button’s early winning streak last season. Very warm and dry conditions were the call of the day and no rain was in sight....

The drivers come back around to the grid and it’s go in Turkey! Webber keeps the lead but Vettel gets a better start and takes second from Hamilton while Schumacher takes fourth from Button. Hamilton instantly fights back and reclaims P2 from Vettel while his teammate does the same, making the move on Schumacher.

Buemi and Hulkenberg make contact and both are forced to pit.  The Renault of Kubica touches the left front of Felipe Massa and Hamilton continues to hound Webber at the front, trading fastest laps. Hamilton is relentless in his pursuit of Webber as the two Red Bulls and the two McLaren’s pull away from the rest of the pack.

Early pitstops begin with several drivers coming in to switch to the harder rubber. Vettel is one of them, putting his Red Bull into pitlane on lap 14 as Jenson Button takes advantage of the clean air. The next lap and the two leaders are in and Webber gets out in front again with Vettel slipping in between them putting Hamilton, who had a minor issue in pitlane, behind them. Button pits and resumes in fourth place.

Hamilton tries to get past Vettel and almost got the job done but went wide in turn twelve. He continues his pursuit of the Red Bull duo with his teammate Jenson Button close behind. The radar claims that rain is expected as the skies begin to darken overhead and teams tell their drivers that showers are coming.

The top four runners are now almost thirty seconds ahead of fifth placed Michael Schumacher who has a big train of cars behind him, Robert Kubica complaining that Nico Rosberg ahead of him is slow. Fastest lap for Vettel on lap 28 with Hamilton still close behind.

Rubens Barrichello is making moves down the field and Jarno Trulli retires his Lotus. The rain is still not appearing with reports now that it may not come at all. Heikki Kovalainen is in the pits, in his actual garage as mechanics look over his Lotus, it seems as if it is a double hydraulic failure for the team.

Hamilton is still on the gearbox of Vettel but just can’t seem to get past. Alonso tries to get past Petrov for ninth but he can’t make a move stick either. Fastest lap for Vettel as he closes in on his teammate lap after lap and on lap 40 he tries to make his move and the two connect going into turn twelve! Both Red Bull’s spin, but while Vettel is out, Webber continues but the two McLaren’s get through and into the lead.

Red Bull mechanics are out and Webber pits for a new nose. Vettel climbs out of his destroyed car and makes his way back to the pits, on foot. Webber’s car is suffering heavy damage but he continues on, rejoining in third just ahead of Schumacher.

The McLaren duo are warned to conserve fuel over the last thirteen laps as a few drops of rain appear. Button passes Hamilton, but Hamilton fights back and reclaims the lead into Turn one, the two McLarens playing very clean as they make some brilliant moves on each other.

Jaime Alguersuari pits for soft rubber and sets the fastest lap of the race. Adrian Sutil passes Kamui Kobayashi for tenth and Jenson Button is told to save fuel as it is critical and to save the tyres through turn eight.  Alonso tries and tries to get past Petrov as Webber sets the fastest lap. Alonso finally makes it stick but he touched the Renault in the process and Petrov is off with a right front puncture. He pits and rejoins for the final few laps, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process!

Hamilton and Button keep it together and cross the line two seconds apart to give the McLaren team a won two finish in Turkey!
