We are not asking for anything outrageous

Brawn GP boss Ross Brawn has indicated that while he really wants Jenson Button to remain with his team for the upcoming 2010 Formula One Championship season, he will not move on his current wage offer that is rumoured to be a lot less than the new world champions is requesting. Instead they are offering their driver the chance to get his cash from independent sponsors.

"We can offer a higher proportion of driver freedom and that will probably be the route we will go," said Brawn. "Jenson has some freedom for his own endorsements but has a commitment to meet our obligations."

Jenson is reportedly asking for a return close to the wage he was being paid by Honda before offering to take a five million pay cut to help out the Brawn team as they struggled to make the grid at the start of the 2009 season.

“We are not asking for anything outrageous,” Button’s manager, Richard Goddard told the Daily Express. “Just three months before Honda pulled out last November, Jenson signed a contract which would have given him a lot more money than we’re looking for now. We recognise times have changed but he is the world champion now and the team have turned things around.”

The eight million pounds he is reportedly asking for is nowhere near the amount paid by other big names in the sport such as Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen or Fernando Alonso and with reports that McLaren may have an interest in is services for next season, Brawn needs to work out a resolution to this problem as soon as he possibly can.
