Even though there has been some speculation over the past few days that new 2009 World Champion, Jenson Button, may be headed to McLaren in 2010 due to the fact that he has yet to renegotiate a satisfying deal with his championship winning Brawn team, it appears as if the situation has almost been rectified with team boss Ross Brawn 99% certain things will be signed very shortly.
"You're never 100 per cent - but I'd say 99 per cent," Brawn was quoted as saying in the Sun about the possibility of Button staying put.
The situation arose when Button expressed his desire to have his original contract of eighth million pounds per season reinstated after he took a five million pound pay cut at the beginning of 2009 in order to help the struggling young team survive. Now that they are in a much stronger position, partly due to Button’s championship winning drive this season, the Brit wants his original salary returned and Brawn is confident that things will be ironed out in the next few weeks.
"Jenson's obviously a great driver, so he's got to be a target. We want Jenson to stay in the team, and I think we'll find a solution,” Brawn added. “Jenson has a contract with us. But that contract is not the salary of a world champion, not the salary of a team that is in a much stronger position than it was 10 months ago. We're working with Jenson to find a balance between what we can afford and what he feels is fair for his status. We've set a target of two weeks after the last race to get this concluded. But maybe it'll happen before then. We have a great relationship with Jenson and he has been a wonderful part of the team and his race performance has been exemplary." |
