Fernando Alonso contested his final race for the Renault team at the weekend’s 2009 season finale at the new Yas marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, the Spaniard completing seven years of partnership with the French based squad. Now it’s on to bigger and maybe better things with the Scuderia Ferrari team where he will partner Felipe Massa in 2010, but first he said his goodbyes to the team that saw him through two world championships.... .
You've enjoyed so many special memories with Renault. Which moments stick in your mind? Obviously winning my two world championships in 2005 and 2006 because this is the ultimate goal for any racing driver. Of all my wins my favourite was Barcelona 2006 as this is the only time I have won my home race and the atmosphere and reaction of the crowd that day was very special.
You've always described Renault as your ‘family' - is it difficult to say ‘goodbye'? Yes because this is the team I joined when I was just starting in Formula One and where I grew up as a driver. Together we achieved all that we could and so we will always have a special connection.
What message do you have for the fans that have supported you during your time at Renault? Obviously the support from the fans has been amazing these last few years. The passion and enthusiasm they have for Formula One is fantastic and to feel their support is always a big motivation for me. |
