Wickens waiting for F1 call

With all the talk of new drivers for the many new teams appearing on the 2010 Formula One grid, there is one that has been somewhat overlooked, despite his involvement with Red Bull.

Toronto’s Robert Wickens, who competed in this year’s inaugural F2 series now holds the FIA approved super licence that is needed to compete in the F1 championship thanks to his runner up performance to Andy Soucek, who is testing at the Jerez circuit for the Williams F1 team on the first of December.

However, despite a few chats with various teams, at this stage there have been no official talks with the F1 world over a future drive.

"I haven't been approached officially, but I have spoken off the record with a few F1 teams," he said in the Globe and Mail. "I will be the only North American in 2010 to hold a valid FIA super-licence, which could pay dividends. But we will have to wait and see."

While most of the top teams already have their line up secured for next season, the four new teams will be looking for competitive racers to fill their ranks. But there is speculation that the Canadian racer is on the verge of losing his Red Bull sponsorship, meaning that he will more than likely need to get big money from somewhere else if his dream of racing in F1 has a chance of coming true.

"Basically, if you can't bring any money to the table, you can't get in with one of the new teams and, with the current economy, you aren't going to get a reserve role with any of the other teams. I have always said my whole life since I was 10 years old that I just want a career in motorsports. I mean the goal is still F1 and my dream is F1, but in the end, I would rather pay my bills racing than being in an office from 9 to 5."
