Williams test drivers were under a lot of pressure
Since BMW WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher was injured at the USGP on the twentieth of June, the German breaking two vertebrae in a high speed shunt during the early stages of the race, the Grove based squad have called on the services of both test drivers, Marc Gene and Antonio Pizzonia.
Unfortunately, neither man really stood out during their time in the car with Marc Gene competing in France and Britain before being replaced by Pizzonia in last weekend’s German Grand Prix. But, as BMW Motorsport director, Mario Theissen explained, both were under a lot of pressure to perform and he is pleased with the way they performed under the circumstances….
“The test drivers are under enormous pressure. They know that it might be their only chance, and they must perform well. It is a difficult situation to cope with,” he explained.
Even regular driver Juan Pablo Montoya admits it is strange to work with someone other than Ralf
"It is strange to work with somebody else other than Ralf over a race but I’ve worked with Marc and Antonio at tests so it’s not totally new," said the Colombian,"It is probably harder for the rest of the team, especially for the race engineers, than for myself. I am doing the best I can at every race, with my people working around my car."
